Just read Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. He really understands cruelty, but the thing that gets me is that he is not terribly freaked out by it. There's something comforting in that. I'm also a sucker for intertextuality of this sort. I really loved The Blind Assassin for the same reason. Also, both books contain an element of science fiction, and themes of deception. David Mitchell's like a slightly more literary Neal Stephenson, or maybe a less tweaked Philip K. Dick.
